10 HRS AGO - On bank holiday Monday we made the short trip to Chipstead in the roasting hot sun. Chipstead gave us a physical encounter, but once again the team overcame whatever was put in front of them and emerged victorious 2-1. An early goal from Danny Bassett was equalised soon after, but a free kick from Daryl Coleman deceived the Chipstead goalkeeper to give us another deserved 3 points. 5 DAYS AGO - Loughborough stakes hopes of survival on lottery bid as historic Whitechapel site fights off developersIt is said that, every day, 20 million people in Britain hear the chimes of a bell cast at Taylor’s of Loughborough. It is the last foundry still casting full sets, known as rings, of church bells. It has produced them for St Paul’s Cathedral and for Yale University. You can even hear one tolling on the AC/DC track Hells Bells.Now, however, the foundry is desperately seeking £4.7m for restorations to its Grade II listed premises just to keep going, the latest challenge to an ancient industry that is struggling to survive. 25/08/2019 - Ceramics has re-emerged as a popular hobby, offering an antidote to the onslaught of tech – and a sustainable creative outlet in a wasteful societyPottery can’t help but feel miraculous: a lump of mud, set spinning on a wheel, transformed by motion and friction into something useful. “A potter is one of the few people left who uses his natural faculties of heart, head and hand in balance – the whole man,” wrote Bernard Leach, the father of British studio pottery. “Good pots require the ardour of vocation and the devotion of a lifetime.”No doubt. But on a first lesson at Turning Earth E10 – a 790 sq metre (8,500 sq ft), collective-run “pottery gym” on an industrial estate in Leyton, east London – a passable pot is just about doable in a morning. It requires about half a kilo of clay and a patient teacher, Natalie Smith, a relatively recent convert herself.
