Half Term in Hitchin: The Best Local Play Areas
Taking your kids to the park is a free and fun activity that will keep them stimulated and physically challenged this October Half Term. Here are some of the best local play areas if you’re planning on getting out and about…
Bancroft Play Area
The Bancroft Play Area located at the Bancroft Recreation Ground is a great spot for kids of all ages. Featuring baby and junior swings, a pirate ship themed climbing frame and slide, and a tarmac surface that is suitable for cold weather play. There are also plenty of paths for bikes and scooters if you have older kids.

Purwell Recreation Ground
This is a great park for younger children. The play area is fenced in for safety and it features a large climbing frame, a wobbly bridge, swings and a slide. There’s also an assault course, zip wire and large swings for the older and more advanced cheeky monkeys. Plus it’s a fantastic place for outdoor sports, with two football pitches, a basketball court and outdoor gym apparatus.

Walsworth Common
This is a grass park with playground so it isn’t suitable if the weather isn’t on your side. But if it’s a dry day, it makes a wonderful spot to keep your tots and toddlers stimulated. Located right next to the River Purwell, you’ll be able to spot the ducks on a good day and there’s plenty of surrounding wildlife. On site, you will have access to a children’s play area (with slide, zip wire, climbing wall and swings), two football pitches, a basketball court and a wheeled sport facility.
