2 DAYS AGO - Are you worried about your blood pressure and not sure how you can lower it? Maybe your doctor has told you that you have high blood pressure, or maybe you keep a track with a kit and you do your own blood pressure testing and it’s a little bit higher than you’d like it to be. There are lots and lots of things you can do to lower your blood pressure. Popular belief has had us believe that salt intake is linked with hypertension – which has been dismissed slightly now. It’s not a bad idea to have a look at the salt content in your food. Often, if you’re consuming a lot of salt, it’s because you’re eating refined and processed foods – and we know that’s not healthy for us. The best drug-free brilliant remedy for high blood pressure is exercise but ensuring the appropriate type and intensity of exercise. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, I strongly recommend you consult a doctor or a personal trainer or both before …

Dulwich Picture Gallery announces £5 tickets for under 30s

19/07/2019 - Dulwich Picture Gallery today announces a new £5 ticket price for visitors aged 18-30*, which will include entry to the Gallery’s Collection and temporary exhibitions. It will come into effect for Rembrandt’s Light this October, which will present a dramatic and contemporary re-telling of works by the Dutch Master. The introduction of the discounted ticket continues the Gallery’s commitment to engage young people with great art and acknowledges the significant financial strain many in this age group are under. It also follows research published by the Art Fund this year showing that under-30s are twice as likely to visit a museum or gallery on a monthly basis to de-stress. It is hoped that the introduction of the £5 ticket will enable as many young people as possible to access and engage with the varied exhibitions and inspiring and iconic spaces at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Those aged 18-30 can now sign up to the scheme at dpg.art/under30 to find out more and be first to hear when Collapse

Pets Corner: Are muzzles a good idea?

17/07/2019 - Under certain conditions even the friendliest dog can bite and a muzzle might be necessary. The very first time many dogs will ever wear a muzzle is at the vet for some sort of emergency procedure. Dogs that are frightened or in pain are much more likely to bite. Safety must come first, however sudden muzzling can make a traumatic experience even more difficult and may cause a lasting negative association for the dog, both with the vet clinic and the muzzle. In my view, each dog should be taught to wear a muzzle as part of everyday life. This means that on the very rare occasion the dog has to be muzzled (travelling abroad or a veterinary procedure are just two examples) the dog is already relaxed about wearing one. Muzzling can also be an important management tool as part of behaviour modification, especially in aggression cases, and for dogs that might be fearful of children or that are space- sensitive. However, even if a dog is muzzled, care should still be taken to …

7 DAYS AGO - Blink and you will have missed the first half of 2019 like I have. Where on earth did January to June go? Here we are in July, the height of the summer and at last the time when we all can enjoy the very best of the summer berries. Personally, I like nothing better than a classic Summer Pudding but rather than bread, I do prefer to make it with slices of brioche for that extra richness. There are many recipes available on line however, my own is simply divine and very quick too. One must have a regular tin of beans to hand to weigh it down but apart from that rather out of sorts ingredient, the rest is as follows: Summer Pudding Loaf Serves: 6 Prep Time: Overnight Cook Time: 10 minutes or less Ingredients An 850ml pudding basin 1 large brioche loaf 250g English strawberries, stalk removed and cut into quarters 250g English raspberries 250g English blueberries 250g English blackberries 100g English redcurrantsplus homemade raspberry coulis (coulis is just a posh word for …

23/07/2019 - Projects in Dulwich Hill As local councillors, we are delighted that the council has been able to fund key improvements to pathways and surfaces in the ward, including on Goodrich Rd, Dawson’s Hill and Piermont Green. The Dawson’s Hill pathway improvements were funded by the Cleaner Greener Safer Fund and have meant the steep pathway into Dawson Heights estate is now fully accessible (see picture below) as well as improved pathway access to Mount Adon Park. We welcome feedback on the new pathways and ideas for further improvements to the ward. Dulwich Festival It was a pleasure to attend a wonderful performance of brass music by Onyx Brass at Dulwich Festival last month. The event took place in the stunning Chapel at Dulwich Gallery. The organisers of Dulwich Festival again put on a wide array of art and music events across the Dulwich area that were enjoyed by a large number of local residents. I look forward to next year’s festival! Mental Health Awareness Week As Southwark Collapse
