Campaign launches to fund game that helps young people to grieve

A crowdfunding campaign has launched in order to fund a revolutionary new game to help children deal with the loss of a parent or close family member.

Apart of Me is a safe virtual space to help young people grieve. Designed by experts in child psychology and bereaved young people, the game enables users to record and securely store memories of loved ones, develop emotional resilience, and turn their suffering into a source of hope for others.

Louis Weinstock, an experienced child psychotherapist and co-founder of Bounce Works, the company behind the campaign, was working in a hospice in Hackney, London when he met a boy whose dad had died a year earlier. As there was no service to help this family talk about the terminal illness, the boy went off the rails – he got excluded from school, took an overdose, joined a gang – his life was totally falling apart. His story was sadly all too typical and that’s when Louis came up with the idea for Apart of Me.

According to the team at Bounce Works, 41% of children in the Youth Offending Service have had a close family member die and 25% of people under 20 that have committed suicide had experienced childhood bereavement – there is little to no support for children going through this incredible trauma and furthermore, children from deprived areas are more likely to lose a parent at an earlier age and less likely to access counselling.

Bounce Works won a grant from the Nominet Trust which has helped them to build a prototype which has been evaluated and endorsed by interested organisations and professionals as well as young people and families in a variety of situations. The team are now launching this crowdfunding campaign to help them to take the most successful aspects of this prototype and grow them into something amazing. In a tweet on Monday night, Stephen Fry showed his support for the project.
